I saw a rainbow pony get strawboozled,

If it's fresh corn on the cob and watermelon- It's SUMMER!

Watermelon spitting contests (even adults played) and drippy, salty fingers with matching chins occupy some of my earliest memories!

Sweet Berry Farm Opens Today!

Today is the day! Too early for strawberries, though (sigh). What local produce will I find? Milk, cream, eggs, ice cream. Meats. Greens, spring onions, ?peas. Who knows what else? Prepared foods from their chef. Seedlings. Excellent soup. I think I'll sit outside & do lunch.

KFC Boycott Group in Newport

Projo has a story today on a protest by PETA: "Yesterday’s demonstration targeted the Association of KFC Franchisees charter sail aboard a 12-meter race yacht."

"Matthews[PETA] acknowledged that supermarkets also buy from suppliers with inhumane practices, but that shouldn’t condone the mistreatment of the approximately 1 billion chickens KFC serves up every year, she said. The United States franchises, like their counterparts in Canada, should demand that suppliers treat chickens more humanely and offer vegetarian alternatives on its menu, she said.

PETA maintains that KFC suppliers drug chickens in unreasonably cramped quarters to rapidly fatten them up, making the birds so top heavy and unhealthy that they suffer broken legs and heart attacks. The suppliers also slaughter the birds inhumanely, PETA asserts, by slitting their throats while they’re conscious. Some birds that aren’t properly killed get boiled alive during the next process — feather removal.

Matthews said that KFC suppliers could make improvements — including gassing chickens to kill them — that would add just two cents to the cost of a meal."

I'd pay 2 cents more. The only KFC franchise here is in Middletown on East Main Rd.

Senior Farm Vouchers

This was certainly well publicizied-NOT! I just read about it. Councilor Santos, where were you? This comes from Middletown's Senior Center website which ain't much but at least has the current newsletter up. You can call the Dir. but don't bother with e-mail.

The Senior Farmers Market Program August 1st – October 31st 9:00am to Noon

Purpose: To provide locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables to low-income seniors.

Eligiility Criteria: Must be 60 or above and have an annual income of:
* 17,223.50 for a single individual
* $23,106.50 for married couples

Benefits: Each approved applicant will receive a voucher with three (3) $5.00 coupons to purchase at APPROVED Farmers Markets in the state. Vouchers will be available on August 1st at the Middletown Senior Center.

This works around the State, I assume. Granted, it ain't much, but it's something.

Slicing Peaches and Recipe
