Sen. Whitehouse Urges Vote for Sen. Reed

Make no mistake: Rhode Island is fortunate to have Jack Reed fighting for us in Washington.
Jack has worked to protect health care coverage for Rhode Island children. He's passed landmark legislation that will help build more affordable housing and help more families stay in their homes. And he's supported stronger investments in alternative and renewable fuels, to help bring down prices at the gas pump.
Here in Washington, I've seen first-hand that Jack Reed is among the Senate's most trusted voices on national security -- the authority on the best way to keep our country safe and bring our troops home from Iraq.

Tuesday Primary

Go here for a ballot sample. In Middletown the actual Dem. Primary is between Jack Reed & Chris Young for Senate. The other names on the ballot are Rep. Kennedy, and State Rep. Rice or candidate Deb Ruggiero (depending on your District) & Senate candidate DiPalma. There are no actual choices to be made here (unless you cast no vote) as there is no opposition. Their names are just on the ballot because state law requires it.

Voter Registrations Due Friday

From Communications Director Chris Barnett:

Secretary of State Mollis is reminding Rhode Islanders they have until tomorrow, August 9, to register to vote in the September 9 primary.

Even though the deadline to register to vote falls on a Saturday, his office at 148 West River St. in Prodence will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. In addition, Mollis published a list of the locations in every city and town that will be open on Saturday so people can take advantage of the extra day to register to vote.

“The overwhelming activity we’ve had so far this year shows Rhode Islanders are passionate about this year’s elections. This is their last chance to make sure they are eligible to make their voices heard in the primary,” he said.

Completed voter registration forms that have not been turned into local board of canvassers by tomorrow must be postmarked by August 9 in order to make the deadline.

Our District has a Primary due to Sen. Jack Reed being challenged by fellow Dem. Chris Young. Anyone running for a State office (Senate or Reps) will find their names on the ballot if they are a Dem. I do not believe that Republicans will participate in the Primary, although I could be wrong.

You can go to Middletown or Newport Public Libraries from 10 to 4; Brownell Library in Little Compton from 9 to 2; or the Town Clerk's Office in Tiverton from 9-4.

In order to register to vote, you must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, a resident of Rhode Island and have a valid social security number or Rhode Island driver’s license. Registering to vote is free. For more info, contact the Secretary of State's office at 222-2340 or elections@sec.state.ri.us.

Candidates' Papers

I personally refer to this as the "crazy time." Anyone wanting to get their name on the ballot has slightly over a week (until July 11) to get "x" amount of valid district signatures. The "x" amount differs according to the position you are seeking. The "district" varies according the position you are running for.

You can be any party to sign these & sign as many as you like. You should be a registered voter & live in the town that the signing sheet indicates. School & council candidates need a minimum of 50. State House candidates need 50 & State Senate needs 100 (been there, done that).

That's it. It does not indicate support, except support for getting candidates' names on the ballot. And many candidates from all parties is a GOOD thing, right? You also can speak with each other about concerns. Discussion is also a GOOD thing.

I'll sign anyone's. And I have 4 registered voters at my house (although finding them all here at the same time is quite a feat). E-mail me privately or post a comment if you'd like to share. In other words, I'll show you mine if you show me yours. Have car & shoes- will travel!

This is the time to demonstrate that you believe in our election system. It doesn't work without all of us helping out.

Be kind to us out there. We're putting ourselves on the chopping block trying to improve our communities.

Newport House 75 Candidate

I am sending this note to let you know that I have filed a Declaration of Candidacy for the RI House of Representatives District 75 seat. This it the seat previously held by the late Paul Crowley.

After many years of service to the community on various boards and organizations, I have decided it is time for me to step up the 'plate' of elected office. Giving my experiences, I feel that I can best do that at the state level.

I will be picking up my nomination papers on July 1st and circulating them for signatures.

There will be a Democratic primary election on September 9th.
