Happy St. Patrick's Day! with music!

Begosh & begorrah, today's the day. Jim McGrath & the Reprobates and others will be performing from 7-11 at the Fastnet Pub- 1 Broadway, Newport. Good food there. I haven't seen these guys in years. One of my first dates with my hubby was to see them downtown at One Pelham East. There was a bouncer & lines waiting to get it AND a cover charge. Ah, the good old days. It was wild in downtown Newport & this was one of the action places. I never paid any cover.

When I was in h.s. those damnable IRA blew up Lord Nelson's statue standing in the middle of O'Connell St. in Dublin. It had been a target before, but these fellows put an end to that symbol of English tyranny & colonialism standing in the midst of its capital. Tommy Makem & the Clancy Bros. wrote a song about it. Praise to all of them! Without them who'd know a darn thing about "real" non-Paddy (Irish-Amer.) music. Up the Republic!

Pre-Inauguration Celeb Music

Renee Fleming sings with the Navy Glee Club at the Pre-Inauguration Concert. The Glee Club represents the best of the best. Hats off to my old friend, Wash. College attendee, Phillip Scott-Smith who used to sing with them. I loved this song from "Carousel" which was my h.s. graduation song, "You'll Never Walk Alone."

I've blogged about Pete Seeger before. Here he's singing a new verse to "This Land is My Land." Enjoy! Love that www.youtube.com

Free Comic Books!! Yeah!!!

It's not exactly in this district (it's the WRONG side of Broadway). The "Annex" has been around for awhile. Yeah, it's cramped, smells kind of funky, & the floors are uneven. Get over it! This Sat. they have free comics to give away! It's "National Comic Book Day!" Don't worry if you miss it, they probably will have extra even after.

As a librarian with little $, I decided to beef up my periodical section & try a few comics. O-O-O-h, some purists didn't like this. "Junk" reading. Not real literature. Au contraire, these proved so popular that there would be actual fights over them. So I expanded the collection & even bought doubles!

If you're a kid & you're reading, it's a good thing! How many adults always read Nobel Prize lit??? Give me a break!

As a kid they cost 5 cents. The annuals were 25 cents (lots of saving of small change went on here). I LOVED: Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Archie, & Batman among others. My brother & I shared them. We shared with our friends. It was fun!! We learned to read & had a darn good time doing so. They also had good ads in the back. Ah, the good old days.

So go already. Take your kids. Or not. They give them to adults, too

What were your favs?

Thanks to "Daily News - Spare Change" & Jim Gillis for the reminder. BTW, Jim, I just heard "I've Got a Brand New Pair of Roller Skates" at the Corner Cafe & I was reminded again of how much I like it. You're all wet!
