What are your Priorities?

Speak Out! Join Campaign Members at a Community Forum!

The Campaign for Rhode Island’s Priorities will host a community forum for Rhode Island constituents to speak out about the Rhode Island state budget and the impact of budget cuts on workers, families, and our most vulnerable children, disabled and elderly.

Aquidneck Island Community Forum: Monday, April 30, 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm Middletown Public Library, 700 West Main Road, Middletown

This group held a meeting last here. There were so many there, that many stood outside. Sen. Paiva-Weed & Sen. Levesque attended. The "Daily News" was a no show.

Remember, if you don't speak up, then who will? "If government is not good perhaps it is because the "good" refuse to participate and so we get the government that we deserve."-Mark Twain

Please try to attend.

Why are budget cuts made against educational classes and sports for our children? How about slashing the office mgrs? If our state reps and senators are proposing consolidation on Aquidneck Island, how about consolidating management before taking away education from our children, especially in Middletown, our grade percentages are below the neighboring communities and the substance abuse is too high. Remove the current leadership, not the classes and sports, our children are our future, a business mgr's $100,000 salary is not!

I haven't blogged on education recently. Towns/cities all over the state are having the same problem.
M'town is reducing staff & cutting middle school sports. While reducing the Bus. Mgr.'s salary wouldn't restore everything, admin. salaries all around seem high.
The State needs to better fund schools instead of turning the bulk of it over to property owners.

RI12,

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ask Majority Leader Paiva Weed to either freeze her tax cap law or pass the education funding formula this year. I can't be there tonight because of work, but I would love to hear her responses. Accoridng to sources, she has given different answers depending on the audience.

I'm going to try my best to be there tonight but I'm in the midst of a huge cold that my husband was kind enough to "share" with me.

I'll ask.

The "good" do participate, they unfortunately just become too worn out to continue fighting the malfeasance of our politicians, wouldn't you agree Mr. Long?

Middletown needs to follow in the footsteps of Newport, by reorganizing depts within school dept and municipal dept. There are too many bosses getting paid the high salaries and not enough lower ladder employees doing all the work! For example, we have a school superintendent and an assistant superintendent and one Town Mgr, why do we need all 3? We have a Finance mgr for both the school and municipal. Again why 2 at salaries of 90,000+. Too many bosses.

Great comments! The "good" certainly do get tired. The results of an "ownership" society that holds you personally accountable for EVERYTHING, I think. How much time do we all actually have for this stuff?

I, too, am concerned over high salaries. Reorganization in the current financial situation would likely seem inevitable, if not necessary.

What bothers me sometimes about salaries of those involved in the state pension system, is actually paying those pensions. I've always wondered why no one has every brought up the idea of a "cap." Some get so much while others make a minimum. You do know that the St. Police & judges weren't affected by the latest round of pension cuts, right?

We all have a right to live, but there do seem to be some extremes out there.
