Rep. Jackson Still Fighting For Taxation Change

I've discussed this bill a number of times. It passed last yr., & ended up being vetoed by the Guv. Again it passed both Houses this yr. (but OUR Sen. Gibbs & Rep. Long were opposed/cast no vote). Rep. Jackson was recently personally asking the Guv not to veto it this yr. This bill would mean almost a million dollars more in income for the city this year alone. I think that he'll veto again. It will probably cost him non-existent votes here anyway. If he doesn't veto, he'll embarass the local legislators who towed his line & voted against it (or looked in the other direction when voting was going on), knowing this would be against their own districts' best interests. Why no editorial from the "Daily News" on this? Perhaps I'll be proven wrong & no one else will even notice some of our local legislators' votes.
This bill would benefit 27,000 Newporters versus 2,000 time-share owners.

After the House passed the bill this year, but before the Senate considered it,Jackson, together with Speaker of the House William J. Murphy, D-West Warwick, met with Carcieri to discuss the bill. Jackson said he wanted to explain the legislation to the governor and see if he could resolve any of Carcieri's concerns. The governor was noncommittal at the end of that meeting,Jackson said."This year's legislation represents a substantial improvement over last year's bill in providing municipal tax assessors with the needed flexibility to employ appropriate methods of assessment in determining the real property value of estates subject to this act," Jackson wrote

Newport has been trying to change this method of taxation for over 20 yrs. So far the guv is remaining non-commital, but he only has a wk. to sign it, let it pass without his signature, or veto it again. Whether the Legislature would reconvene to override the veto is doubtful, I think. Much of the info in this article was from today's Daily News, but the link will cost you.
