Good News, Bad News for District Schools

The parents determined to save Sheffield School, Newport (in this district) unfortunately failed. It's always a tragedy when a small neighboorhood school that works closes. Bottom line: it's about money!

Portsmouth Schools thought that they did well in the new legislative proposed budget. But there seems to be problems & discrepencies with the state reimbursements for Boys' Town. The good news is that their legislative representation (both Republican & Democratic) are looking out for them & will try and get this settled in Portsmouth's favor. Good for them! I'm still hearing complaints about 2-3 yrs. ago when Sen. Gibbs (& all our then Republican delegation)was unable to recover $150,000 which belonged to Middletown & was mis-directed to Newport. So much for her legislative clout. That's a good amount of money for a school system to lose. It was reimbursement for a group home which sent its students here. I see that she is sponsoring legislation this yr. regarding group home educational reimbursements. I'm not holding my breath here.
