Property Taxes

Tired of playing the reassessment lottery? The GOOD news is that your house is worth a lot more than you thought it was. The BAD news is that you will have to pay taxes on it.

You know that most of your taxes go to pay for schools. When you read that the various districts in Newport Co. are ALL having trouble coming in on budget, you KNOW what will happen to your local property tax rate.

And lest you think that you are a renter and don’t have to worry, be afraid! Those increased costs will be passed on to you.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Blaming the local council person or school committee person doesn’t work, as you know all too well. They’re caught between a rock and a hard place. This current system was devised by the State Legislature as a quick way to funnel more money to communities without raising or changing the state tax system.

So, how is it working for you?

I’m suggesting an overhaul of the tax structure in our state. Property taxes just aren’t fair. It’s not fair that big business cuts special corporate deals, but no such luck for the small business person.

We need for the State to devise a fairer way to fund our schools rather than pitting taxpayers against each other. The State and Federal governments need to pick up a larger share (after all, it’s THEIR mandates that we are following).

We should discuss using a California property tax system which reassesses ONLY when your home is sold. No more expensive re-evaluation costs either. I support R.I.G.H.T. (R.I. Gets Honorable Taxation). (http://www.righttax.org/)

It was Mark Twain who said, “If government is not good perhaps it is because the "good" refuse to participate and so we get the government that we deserve.”

We deserve better. So participate. Elections are right around the corner. Consider yourself invited.

It takes a lot of guts, stamina, & $ to run.
As Adlai Stevenson once said, "Eggheads of the world, unite! We have nothing to lose but our yolks!"
