Hi, Eileen... Unfortunately, the first victim of the digital age was McLuhan himself, who found himself reduced to this soundbite, which *actually* means the opposite of what this cartoonist thinks. The medium -- ubiiquitous digital connection in a read-write space -- contains a message of empowerment and decentered authorship.
McLuhan predicted, in 1962, that computers would connect the world in a web that was a more full extension of all the human senses. What they obsolesce was "print" not "writing," as the current crises of the newspaper industry well illustrate.
He argued that this rebalancing of the human sensorium would reduce the *linearity* of print; change its role, not destroy it. And what do we see as the main distinguising feature of blogs and the Web? Hypertext linking, the very essence of non-linearity.
Thanks for the comment. It's thought-provoking. But I'm with the duck. It's been a long day. I swear, some are longer (or shorter) than others. It reminds me of the Guv's budget- he always forget to say this, BTW- "and then a miracle occurs."
