Middletown Airport Meeting- 6 PM, Apr. 24

**UPDATE: Please read comment section. All those bordering the airport should attend this meeting.

Public Mtg on Newport Airport- 14, April 2008

The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) will hold a public information meeting to review plans for vegetative removal (brush and tree clearing) and installation of obstruction lighting planned for Newport State Airport required to comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport design standards. The Newport Airport Master Plan, made public in November of 2007, contains a section describing proposed recommendations regarding this clearing. A copy of the final Master Plan is available at http://www.pvdairport.com/ under the General Aviation section.
The purpose of this meeting is for the RIAC staff to provide the public with a briefing of the summary FAA requirements and an outline of the project details. The meeting will take place on Thursday, April 24, 2008 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Middletown Town Hall on 350 East Main Road, Middletown, RI.

The last time the airport did the brush removal & lighting installation without notifying the public there were TONS of complaints. Those of you in the immediate vicinity of the airport may want to check this out.

A RIAC Master Plan is not supposed "to be made public." It is supposed to be a public process complete with a citizens' panel right from the start.

When RIAC recently cleared the vegetation at Green State Airport, it was cited by the state DEM for permitting violations.

I would urge the public to request that the FAA be at the meeting to explain the master planning process and the design standards for vegetation removal.

Find out what the FAA says can be done to protect the environment. And videotape the entire meeting. Good Luck.
