More Trash Talk in Middletown

The Town Council is holding two meetings on Fri. - one with Sen. Reed & another with Rep. Kennedy. I guess Sen. Whitehouse is on the outs. The reason - to try & convince the Navy to give/lease us the current waste removal Burma Rd. site.
Ever been there? Having been involed in real estate for many years, I know that land sites should ideally be considered for their highest and best use. This "dump" site could win an international contest for the most beautiful waste site in the world. It sits atop a small hill surrounded by nature overlooking the Bay. It's gorgeous. Using this ground for a dump site is almost beyond the imagination. No wonder the Navy refuses to continue the lease and has been saying so for a year.
So despite the fact that we could combine with Portsmouth for a removal site and employ private trash haulers for personal pickup at a SAVINGS, the Council is going to two influential Congressional members to pretty please ask the Navy to reconsider.
Geez, Louise! Even the Newport Daily News editorialized against this one (sorry, no link).
Councilmen Silveira & DiPalma had objections. The latter expressed that we might be blowing any good will on this one item at the expense of higher & better requests at a latter date. The former had a request on the docket to add other items of interest for the meetings. Curiously, that Council session was posponed until after the legislative meetings. Anyone familiar with the word, "moot?"
Instead the Council is trash talking.
What could they discuss? How about funding from NOAA for the pollution at First & Third Beaches? Closing the doughnut hole in Medicaid for seniors? Controlling health care costs, more school funding, affordable house funding, etc. But, no. They're talking trash.
I've also notice that the meeting with our state legislators to discuss local concerns has disappeared. Why? What about legislation to lower arsenic regs, an easier voting process (like no-fault absentee ballots), increasing the town's take of the hotel/beverage tax for the benefit of ALL, covering all our citizens for health care, more school funding, state help with beach pollution, etc. Of course, if and when they do meet, the deadling for introducing legislation will have passed.
Hello, endless bickering about why Library Director Robert L. Balliot left, insistence that the Library board resign, and the seeming inability to look forward to major concerns rather than brouhahas.
