Beach Season Starts - First Beach Closed

Good thing that it wasn't a beach day. First Beach was closed at both the Newport & Middletown ends. The problem just keeps getting worse each year. Honestly now, do you really want to swim there this weekend even if the ban is off? Just how much sewerage (read as toilet water) are you willing to put up with.

Senator June N. Gibbs (R – Dist. 12, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Tiverton), said, "As a member of this Joint Committee, I am thrilled to see this excellent report [on the Marine Environment] approved and adopted. I am confident that the Bay will flourish under this kind of management. [Feb. '04] Ms. Gibbs, a member of the panel that drafted the report, is optimistic major steps will be taken to preserve Narragansett Bay. "The catastrophe last summer made a big difference," she says, adding that she has watched sensitivity to the environment grow locally since she first moved to Middletown in 1950.

"Ms. Gibbs is sponsoring a key bill to phase out cesspools." This story was dated March 1, 2004. She still hasn't managed to get this "key bill" passed. So thanks for the toilet water in OUR ocean. How many more beach closings will we put up with? As a SENIOR legislator, with NO leadership position, she isn't even able to find a co-sponsor for this "key bill." So much for seniority and experience. So much for "watching sensitivity." YUCK! As my youngest son would say, "Blah, blah, blah; Yackety, smackety."
