Property Taxes
The recent "Daily News" editorial on the Senate's porposed plan to cap local proerty tax increases was right on the money as I've discussed before (see 4/23 "The Middle Class & the American Dream"). Without making any changes in how property taxes are raised or used, merely telling local officials that they can't raise needed funding merely passes the buck to those least able to do anything about it. Exactly how are local governments expected to pay their bills (for items the legislature has mandated)? Our district's towns/cities are having more & more financial difficulties as it is. The Senate's proposal covers up the real problem and should be the LAST part of a more detailed plan to ease our districts' impending crises. School committee members & local council members should definitely be at full alert on this one.
